Yuan Longping, born on September 7, 1930, is a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator. He is best known for developing the first hybrid rice strain in the world and improving rice productivity, contributing significantly to global food security.
Yuan grew up in Beijing and attended Southwest Agricultural College (now part of Southwest University) in Chongqing. He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural education in 1953 and a Ph.D. in rural development from the University of Paris in 1960.
In the 1960s, China suffered from a severe food shortage due to its large population and limited arable land. Yuan was tasked with finding a solution. He began experimenting with hybrid rice, a combination of two or more rice varieties that produced higher yields and greater disease resistance. After years of trials and errors, in 1974, he successfully developed the first hybrid rice strain, which produced around 20% more grain than conventional rice varieties. Since then, hybrid rice has been widely adopted across China and many other countries and has helped feed millions of people.
Yuan has been recognized globally for his research on hybrid rice. He was awarded the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 2004, the World Food Prize in 2004, and the Golden Goose Award in 2018. He also served on several national and international committees, including the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
In addition to his scientific achievements, Yuan was dedicated to promoting education and training future generations of agricultural professionals and researchers. He established several research and training institutes, including the China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center, which has trained hundreds of students from around the world.
Yuan passed away on May 22, 2021, at the age of 91. However, his contributions and legacy in the field of agriculture and food security will continue to inspire generations to come.
