Learning English can be a daunting task for some people, and I am one of them. Despite growing up in a country where English is widely spoken, I struggled to master the language in school. It wasn't until I started interacting with native speakers that I realized the reason for my struggle was not a lack of vocabulary or grammar, but a lack of interest. English was simply not my cup of tea.
Reflecting on my aversion to English, I traced it back to my early years. My parents spoke to me in our native language and sent me to a local school where English was taught as a second language. However, the methodology used to teach English in school was outdated and uninteresting, and I felt disconnected from the language. Moreover, I had no exposure to English outside of school as none of my friends or relatives spoke the language. The result was a lack of motivation and interest in learning English.
It was only when I moved to an English-speaking country for higher education that I realized the need to learn English to communicate effectively. However, the first few months were challenging as I struggled to keep up with my peers. That's when I made a conscious effort to learn English in a way that was interesting and engaging. I started watching English movies and TV shows, reading books and articles in English, and interacting with native speakers to improve my conversational skills. I also took up courses that were relevant to my interests, such as creative writing and public speaking. Gradually, I developed a liking for English and started noticing the progress I was making.
Today, I can confidently say that English is no longer a daunting task for me, but a source of joy and satisfaction. I have come to appreciate the nuances of the language and its impact on my personal and professional life. I enjoy reading and writing in English and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. Learning English has opened up new avenues for me, both academically and professionally.
In conclusion, learning a new language can be intimidating, especially when it is not your cup of tea. However, with patience, persistence, and the right approach, one can overcome their aversion and develop a liking for it. For me, learning English was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, and I am glad that I took the effort to embark on it.
